The Formula
Age = Current year − Birth year
Then adjust by one depending on your birthday:
- Birthday has passed this year: age = current year − birth year
- Birthday has not passed yet this year: age = current year − birth year − 1
Example — born in 1990:
- 2026 − 1990 = 36
- If your birthday is in January, February, March, or April and it has passed (today is April 25), you are 36.
- If your birthday is in May or later, you are still 35 — you won’t complete 36 years until your birthday arrives.
Why the Birthday Matters
Age is counted in completed years. You don’t turn 36 until you’ve actually lived 36 full years—meaning the anniversary of your birth this calendar year must have passed.
This is why two people born in the same year can legitimately give different answers to “how old are you?” for most of the year. Born January 1, 1990 vs. December 31, 1990: from January 2 to December 30, 2026, one is 36 and the other is still 35.
Birth Years with Milestone Ages in 2026
Some birth years line up with significant milestone ages this year:
| Birth Year | Milestone Age | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| 2008 | 18 | Legal adulthood, voting age in the US |
| 2005 | 21 | Legal drinking age in the US |
| 2001 | 25 | Prefrontal cortex fully developed; car insurance rates drop |
| 1996 | 30 | Common life-milestone birthday |
| 1986 | 40 | Another major milestone |
| 1976 | 50 | Half-century |
| 1964 | 62 | Earliest Social Security eligibility |
| 1961 | 65 | Medicare eligibility |
| 1959 | 67 | Full Social Security retirement age for this cohort |
If you’re approaching one of these ages this year, knowing your exact birthday countdown can help with planning—especially for Social Security and Medicare, where the month of your birthday affects your enrollment windows.
